How to use the Barcode Scanner for Asset Management

Building Owners and Facility Managers can learn how to manage assets more efficiently with Layer's new mobile Barcode Scanner for iOS.

Accessing asset data in Layer is made simple by using the new mobile Barcode Scanner for iOS

Here's how to get up and running in three easy steps:

1. Give each asset a barcode tag

To get started, you'll need to select a method for assigning barcodes to your assets. You have two options: purchase pre-printed asset tags, available from multiple online vendors or use an existing barcode system.

Once you have affixed the labels to the asset you want to track, you will then need to create the connection between the physical asset's barcode and its corresponding Element in Layer.

2. Assign each barcode an Element in Layer

Linking each barcode tag to a Layer Element is an easy one-time process.

First, make sure you download the iOS app for Layer and open the app on your mobile device, then choose the appropriate Project.

Navigate to the Element for the asset that you are connecting. For information about setting up your Categories and Elements, click here.

Click the Edit Fields button then click the + button.

To capture the number on the asset, click in the newly created Asset Tag field to manually enter the data or click the Barcode icon to activate the scanner (your mobile device's camera) and aim it at the barcode tag.

You should now see the barcode tag number listed in the Asset Tag field.

As we mentioned above, this is a one-time process unless you change how each barcode tag is linked to Layer.

3. Use barcodes to access your data in Layer

Open the Layer app on your mobile device and select the Project containing the Element that you are searching for.

Click the Barcode icon in the upper right corner.

Point the camera at the barcode on the asset and Layer will automatically navigate to the corresponding Element.

Do this over and over again to efficiently navigate to the asset you're looking for!
