Create and Manage Layer Elements
Learn how to create, rename, duplicate, or delete Elements in Layer. Follow steps for creating Elements from scratch, importing data, or using templates.

1. Create an Element
There 3 ways to create an Element with a Category:
Create an Element from Scratch:
Click into the Category and click the
New Element
button in the lower left of the white Element list view. [screenshot]Name your Element.
Add Fields to the Element if you haven’t don’t so already. Do this by clicking the
Add Field
button in the lower right corner of the detail view.
Import Elements and their data from a Spreadsheet:
Use our Excel Import Tool, follow these instructions here
Import Elements from a Template: Note that the only way to do this is to import the entire Category.
Click the blue
+
button to the right of the word “Category” to prompt the New Category dialogue box.From the dialogue box, choose a Template from the Layer Templates or the Company Templates list. Click
Apply Template
to import the new Category and its Elements.
2. Rename an Element
There are 2 ways to rename an Element.
From the Element List View:
In the Element list view, click the three dot menu icon to the right of the Element name.
Click
Edit Element Name
.Rename the Element and click
Save
.
From the Element Detail View:
Click the name of the Element and rename the Element. Layer will autosave your changes.
3. Duplicate an Element
From the Element List View or the Element Detail View, click the three dot menu icon.
Click
Duplicate Element
from the drop-down, this will automatically duplicate the Element and its name with the word “copy” at the end of the name.Rename Element as needed.
4. Delete an Element
From the Element List View or the Element Detail View, click the three dot menu icon.
Click
Delete Element
from the dropdown, this will delete the Element.
