Layer Site Visit Guide
Layer was designed to help you easily collect project data while on site.
Before Going Out on Site
- Ensure your device is running the latest iOS version (if using iPhone or iPad).
- Download the latest Layer app from the App Store.
💡 For the best experience, we recommend using the Layer iOS app instead of a browser. The app automatically saves photos to your device’s camera roll.
- Open your Layer project in the app to make sure all project data is available offline.
- Test your device by placing a dot annotation on a drawing view or taking a test photo. (Use a dummy project or category if you want to keep your element numbering intact.)
While On Site
- If you expect limited or no internet connection, we recommend going offline before collecting data. Weak Wi-Fi areas, like basements or remote sites, can cause slower responses.
- When working offline, periodically reconnect to sync your data throughout the day. Uploading smaller batches reduces risk and keeps your work safely saved.
Data Collection
Layer supports reliable data collection on site. Your data is always safe—saved locally when offline and synced automatically when online.
- Photos: Photos taken and uploaded from your device automatically sync to Layer when connected. In offline mode, photos are saved locally and uploaded once you’re back online. You can check pending uploads in the Files page of your project. If you’re using the iOS app, photos are also saved to your camera roll.
- Drawing View Annotations: If pins appear as X, this indicates limited internet connection. When offline, PDF markups display with X placeholders until issue numbers are generated to ensure uniqueness.
- Layer Field Values: Field data is saved as you enter it, either locally or to the cloud, depending on your connection.
Troubleshooting
If data isn’t uploading properly, try the following:
- Check for pending uploads in the Files category.
- Restart the upload process by toggling offline and online mode.
- Re-upload photos manually from your photo roll (iOS only).
- Move photos taken in the wrong category or field by editing the file’s metadata.
