Session 2 of the Layer Maker Course

This session goes beyond basic fields into the field types that turn a flat list of elements into a connected project model: relationships, formulas, lookups, and rollups.

By the end of the hour, you'll know how to link elements across categories, calculate derived values, surface data from related records, and aggregate up to totals.

What we'll cover

  • Relationship fields: linking a Door to its Room, a Room to its Finish Schedule, an Asset to its Manufacturer

  • One-to-many vs. many-to-many relationships, and when each makes sense

  • Formula fields: calculating areas, totals, percentages, and conditional values from other fields on the same element

  • Lookup fields: pulling values from a related element into the current one

  • Rollup fields: aggregating across a set of related elements (sum, average, count, concatenate)

  • Common patterns: door-to-room schedules, FF&E-to-room rollups, condition-score averages

Who it's for

  • BIM managers and data leads building schedules and matrices in Layer

  • Anyone who has used basic text, number, and select fields and is ready to model relationships between elements

  • Firms migrating from Excel-based schedules where everything is flat and duplication is the cost

If you haven't seen Session 1, the recording covers the foundation this session builds on.
